There are a lot of Madrid to discover. And it’s going to be very difficult to discover them all, so let’s take it one step at a time.
Today we bring you Madrid as a family, a Madrid that you can enjoy with the whole family; whether you have your parents visiting, your grandparents, or your siblings with your nephews and nieces.
We are going to walk through a Madrid full of fun for the whole family, where the hours will fly by and you won’t miss a thing in one of the cities with the best leisure activities in Europe.
Tips for discovering Madrid as a family
Of course, before we start our plans, we want to give you a few tips. Remember that you are in one of the cities with, if not the most, hustle and bustle and activities to do. Why do we say this? Because of the order.
Don’t improvise, or at least don’t leave everything to improvisation. Make a plan, a roadmap to follow, because indecision can lead you to waste a lot of time.
Once you are clear about the best plans that suit you and your family, book. Whenever necessary, book, whether it’s a restaurant table, a tour or the purchase of a ticket.
When you book, you’ll find that the vast majority of places offer family discounts, so there’s another advantage to going with your family and planning ahead. Of course, anything you can do online is all the better.
And lastly, though it goes without saying, get around on foot or by public transport. If the distances are relatively short, Madrid deserves to be discovered on foot, every corner hides a story or a monument that you wouldn’t know if you didn’t go on foot. And if you want to save time, the bus or metro are the perfect solution.
Family plans in Madrid with young children
Amusement Park
Our first plan is perfect for everyone. No matter your age, no matter if you are afraid of rides or not, the amusement parks in the capital are fantastic.
Both the Parque de Atracciones de Madrid and the Parque Warner offer a wide variety of attractions, from the latest generation to traditional ones. In addition, they offer shows with the whole family in mind.
They have fantastic public transport connections, as well as a wide range of restaurants and shops. The hard part now is choosing which one to go to. You’re right, go to both.
El Retiro
A visit to the Retiro Park is a must as soon as you set foot in Madrid. It has some of the city’s most recognisable monuments, such as the Pond, the Crystal Palace and the sculpture of the Fallen Angel.
But instead of exploring the city on foot, why not by bike? There are several bicycle rental companies, although the Madrid City Council’s BiciMAD service is the most recommendable.
This will give you another point of view, moving faster, being able to see more monuments and attractions, as well as exercising as a family.
And while you’re on your bike, we recommend you visit other places in the capital that are also the lungs of the city and worth visiting, such as Casa de Campo and Madrid Río. Being such a large area, a visit by bike is a great idea, and you’ll discover how well Madrid treats its cyclists with bike lanes and a great deal of respect from drivers.
Photos around Madrid with Instagram in mind
Maybe not everyone in your family enjoys taking pictures, but if you find someone to keep up with you, two of you are more than enough to get what you’re looking for; the perfect photos.
And be careful, because we’re not just talking about taking pictures of the most important monuments and attractions in Madrid; Puerta de Alcalá, Gran Vía, Plaza Mayor or Puerta del Sol. Here we are going to recommend different places.
Think about seeing things from a different point of view, such as a viewpoint, the Mirador de la Cornisa del Palacio Real or the Mirador de la Montaña del Príncipe Pío.
In addition, there are places that cry out for photos, places that seem to have been born to tag people. We’re talking about places like the Ikono Museum Madrid, with five different themed areas spread over 15 rooms, the Museum of Light with its thirteen spaces or the Sweet Space Museum, a place with unique experiences that you have to live to understand.
Urban Madrid, Urban Art
Art is present in Madrid wherever you go. As well as having some of the best museums in the world, such as the Prado Museum, which has guides designed for the whole family and the youngest visitors, Madrid is overflowing with art in its streets.
And just in case you don’t believe it and the museums have become too small for you, we recommend you take the Graffiti Tour through the streets of the capital. You’ll be able to admire true works of urban art, pieces that should be in museums but which, on the other hand, are on the street within everyone’s reach.
Gran Vía
Gran Vía has everything for everyone. As well as having shops of all kinds, a wide range of restaurants and rooftops with breathtaking views, it has the best shows in the country.
Stroll around its theatres and choose the musical you like best, a play or a monologue by the family’s favourite artist. The range of entertainment on offer is immense and you’re sure to find something for everyone.
Football for all
With two of the best teams in the world, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid, it’s hard not to think about a visit to their stadiums. If you are a football fan you should try to get a ticket, but if not, you should not miss the tour of their stadiums.
Its two stadiums, Santiago Bernabéu and Metropolitano respectively, are two true architectural gems, with a groundbreaking design and a surprising interior. Visit their trophy rooms, dressing rooms, boxes or even walk around the pitch.
And for the real football fans, your itinerary should not miss the Legends: The Home of Football museum, in the city centre, where you can take a look at the greatest legends and exploits of world football.
